Once known as the Delta Zeta Scholarship, the Ernest K. Cochran Memorial Scholarship was rededicated after its namesake’s death in 2005.
“My husband was always a good supporter of Delta Zeta,” said Betty Cochran Page, who is a 50-year member of the service organization. “When he died, (the sorority) received a lot of memorial donations for him.”
The fund focuses on students applying to smaller schools.Scholarship is not part of the equation, but participating in school activities is something the group considers important.
Delta Zeta is the local chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, an international service organization whose members volunteer and raise money for a variety of charitable groups.
“In Marble Falls, we help the underprivileged,” Betty said. “We like to do things for people who are having problems, who wouldn’t be able to get help elsewhere.”
Ernest received the sorority’s Zeus award for his contributions to the group. He also gave to the community at large. As a local businessman and grocer, Ernest always donated food for those who needed it during the holidays.
“The chapter knew him well,” Betty said. “It was a fitting thing to make the scholarship fund a memorial for him.”
